The Polish Company That Changed Online Shopping Across Europe

Millions of Europeans now buy products online without thinking twice about delivery. They order clothes, electronics, books, or cosmetics, then collect packages from automated lockers on the way home.

That convenience feels normal today.

A decade ago, it was still a radical idea.

The company behind that shift is InPost, a Polish logistics business that turned parcel lockers into one of Europe’s fastest-growing delivery networks and changed how online shopping works across the continent.

The Idea That Started in Poland

InPost was founded in 2006 by Polish entrepreneur Rafał Brzoska. The company introduced its first Paczkomat parcel lockers in Kraków in 2009.

At the time, most online deliveries depended on couriers arriving at people’s homes. Missed deliveries were common, and customers often had to wait around for packages.

InPost offered something different.

Customers could collect parcels 24 hours a day from automated lockers placed near apartment blocks, supermarkets, petrol stations, and shopping centers. The model quickly became popular because it was faster, more flexible, and often cheaper than traditional delivery methods.

From Poland to the Rest of Europe

What began as a Polish logistics experiment eventually became one of Europe’s biggest delivery networks.

Today, InPost operates across multiple European countries including the UK, France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands. The company manages tens of thousands of parcel lockers and out-of-home collection points across the continent.

Its growth accelerated through major acquisitions, including French delivery giant Mondial Relay and British logistics company Yodel. Those deals helped InPost expand beyond Poland and compete directly with some of Europe’s largest delivery operators.

Why Customers Loved It

The success of InPost came down to one simple thing.

People hate waiting for deliveries.

Parcel lockers solved that problem. Customers could pick up packages whenever they wanted, often within walking distance of home. The system also reduced failed delivery attempts and helped retailers lower logistics costs.

As online shopping exploded across Europe, demand for locker-based delivery grew with it. InPost handled more than one billion parcels annually and continued expanding its network at record speed.

A Polish Success Story With Global Reach

For years, Poland was often seen as a market importing technology and business models from Western Europe.

InPost flipped that narrative.

The company created a delivery system in Poland that larger international markets later adopted. Today, its locker networks are becoming a standard part of e-commerce infrastructure across Europe.

What started with a few machines in Kraków has grown into one of the most influential logistics businesses on the continent.

And for millions of online shoppers, it quietly changed what fast delivery means.
